College Media Association Names The Maroon No. 1 Best College Media Outlet of the Year in the U.S.

Loyola press release - October 29, 2018

Loyola University New Orleans celebrates this week, after the College Media Association named its 95-year-old student-run newspaper, The Maroon, the No. 1 Best College Media Outlet of the Year in the nation. In judging the Best College Media Outlet award, the CMA judges considered excellence in delivering information through multiple channels, including the printed page, video, audio, web, social and mobile.

The College Media Association announced its Pinnacle awards this weekend in Louisville, including the two national awards earned by The Maroon during the 2017-2018 academic year, First Place for Four-Year Best College Media Outlet of the Year and Third Place, Best Newspaper, Entertainment Page Spread. CMA’s Pinnacle Awards honor both the best college media organizations and individual work by students. The contest is open to student work produced for any college media organization, including print, broadcast and online outlets, during an academic year.

The outstanding national awards will be added to the School of Mass Communication’s award vault, which has collected hundreds of awards in the last three years, including a national Pacemaker Award, considered the “Pulitzer Prize of College Journalism,” and last year’s title of No. 2 Best College Media Outlet from the College Media Association.

“The Maroon has a tried-and-true history of excellence, and through these competitions, our students are not only showing their professional worth, but pushing themselves to develop their capabilities and achieve ‘personal bests,’” said Sonya Duhé, director of the School of Mass Communication at Loyola. “Seeing our students win again and again on a national level shows us that they are developing the fortitude and skills they need for professional success in a competitive and changing environment.”

Journalism and strategic communications students at Loyola learn from professors at the forefront of journalism, advertising and public relations fields. In The Maroon’s cutting-edge newsroom and the Shawn M. Donnelley Center for Nonprofit Communications, they build skills using state-of-the-art technology used across the communications industry.

“The Maroon has been a leader in the college news industry throughout its nearly 100-year-old history — and in recent years has broken records while winning national prizes. Being named the No. 1 College Media Outlet in the nation shows that we are not only a great newspaper — it recognizes The Maroon as ‘the whole package,’ a leader in the print, video and digital space, which is more important now than ever,” said Loyola Student Media adviser and instructor Michael Giusti ‘00, M.B.A. ‘12. “We are thrilled to see The Maroon continue its longstanding tradition of excellence, even as a new cohort joins the staff.”

The Maroon began reaching new heights three years ago with a record-breaking year that garnered 93 awards earned by students, including the Pacemaker Award. The 2016-2017 academic year brought the student newspaper’s second highest number of awards yet - with 84 awards earned during the 2015-2016 academic year by Loyola students working for The Maroon. And this year, a cohort of new students continues to garner a plethora of prizes, in keeping with Loyola tradition.
